Fall Home Maintenance Checklist

Though the start of fall was a little over a month ago, not until recently has it actually felt like fall. Which means there’s no better time before the bitter cold hits to start (or finish) your fall home maintenance checklist! Taylor Homes has some ideas for you.

Care for your trees or shrubs. It’s a good idea to observe your trees and look for any signs of dead limbs and trim them. This could help prevent tree loss and avoid falling limbs in winter storms.

Rake leaves. Leaving leaves on your lawn over the winter months can inhibit spring growth – so if you want a vibrant green yard come spring, start raking those leaves!

Clean gutters. Once most of the leaves have fallen be sure to clean out the gutters and downspouts. Clogged gutters can cause water to pool and damage your roof or siding.

Seal gaps. Seal those gaps where critters could enter! As the temperatures begin to drop, small rodents are looking for warm places. Fill small holes and cover any large gaps for both the rodents and insects.

Stock up for winter supplies. Get your pen and paper and put these on your next shopping list (or check your current items to be sure they’re in good condition). Shovels, ice scrapers, pet-safe ice melt, car emergency kits and fuel (for snow blowers).

Check walkways, railings, stairs and the driveway for winter safety. When the snow falls and turns ices, walking outside your front door can be a hazard. Check any outside stairs and that the driveway is in good condition to make shoveling easier.

Shut off exterior faucets and store hoses. Remove those outside hoses before the temperatures are below freezing. Drain the hoses and store them indoors.

Check safety devices. This is a good reminder to check your safety devices including smoke detectors, fire extinguishers, your home for radon and think about a carbon monoxide detector.
