Summer Safety Tips

The school year is coming to a close and the official first day of summer is just around the corner. Whether you’re getting out of town for a summer vacation or plan to spend most of your summer days at the pool, it is important to review some of the top summer safety tips. These tips will ensure that your kiddos stay safe so you and your family can relax and have an enjoyable summer.

POOL SAFETY
One of the most popular summer past-times is going to the pool. Before you take off to enjoy a day in the sun, there are a few safety tips to review. When taking kids to the pool, be sure to have appropriate flotation devices or life vests on them at all times. Additionally, review with them pool rules, such as no running and break times. If you are with older children who can swim on their own, it is still advised to keep an eye on them, especially if there is no lifeguard on duty, as even experienced swimmers can become tired after a long day at the pool.

OUTDOOR SAFETY
Spending time at the park, playground, or outside in your neighborhood this summer? There are a few safety tips to keep in mind. First, always make sure that you are putting sunscreen on, even if you are not going to the beach or pool. Anytime you are out in the sun for a significant amount of time, you and your children are at risk for sunburn. Additionally, during the hot summer months it is important to stay hydrated and cool. Dress in lightweight clothes and always have drinks on hand. Another tip for enjoying the outdoors is to protect yourself from pests by putting on bug spray before you go outside.

TRAVEL SAFETY
When travelling, especially by car, for a summer vacation, there are some safety tips to review before you depart. Make sure that you are taking regular breaks during the trip to relieve the driver and give everyone a stretch break. Additionally, make sure that your car is packed and ready for your trip. Keeping a first-aid and safety kit in your car is a necessity. Other things you might want to have during the trip are snacks, drinks, and games to keep your kids entertained during the ride.
