10 Things to Do to Get Ready for Memorial Day

Memorial Day is right around the corner. This day isn’t about cookouts, being out on the lake, or having a day off work. Memorial Day is about taking time to honor the men and women who have died while serving in the armed forces. Here are 10 things you can do to get ready for this year’s holiday:

  1. Buy a flag to show off your American pride. This is a simple way to show your respect for our country. When you fly your flag it is important to follow proper etiquette and guidelines. You can find out what they are here.
  2. Volunteer in your community. Find an organization that helps veterans and see what you can do to make a difference in their lives.
  3. Pay your respects at your local veterans cemetery. Thank those who gave their lives for our country.
  4. Donate flowers to a veterans plot. If there isn’t a veteran’s cemetery near you, you can sponsor flowers to be placed at Arlington National Cemetery. An organization called The Memorial Day Flowers Foundation will put flowers on a fallen soldiers plot. Prices start at $5.
  5. Shop at a Veteran-owned business. Did you know that there is a website that gives you a directory of veteran-owned organizations? You can visit it here.
  6. Take a virtual tour of the White House. You can learn the history of the White House without having to leave your own home.
  7. Write a letter to soldiers and their families. Let them know that you appreciate their sacrifice.
  8. Phone a veteran that you know and thank them for their service. A phone call is more personal than a text message or email and will make them feel appreciated.
  9. Watch a documentary about veterans. This will help you be better informed of the dangers they face and can give you a greater appreciation for the sacrifice that military personnel make.
  10. Wear a poppy flower. On September 27, 1920, the poppy became the official flower of The American Legion family to memorialize the soldiers who fought and died during the war.

If you are military either active or retired, we offer a special discount on a new Taylor home. This is our way of saying THANK YOU for all you have done for our country!
