Five Tips to Get Your Home Back-to-School Ready

With fall quickly approaching and kids heading back to school, life can get a little bit hectic. Coordinating schedules, getting supplies, and keeping up with everything happening during this time of the year can take up a lot of your time and mental energy.

As you prepare for a jam-packed schedule of sports practice, health check-ups, and parent-teacher conferences, take a look at these five tips to help you prepare your home for back-to-school season.

1. Clear your mudroom or entryway. Make rushed mornings go a little bit smoother by setting up an organization system for belongings for when someone leaves or enters your home. Clear the space to create storage for bags, books, shoes, and jackets so that your kids don’t lose their belongings as easily and can locate them quickly. Hooks, storage containers, cubbies, and baskets will come in handy. When everyone comes home, they’ll have an organized place to drop their belongings, leading to less chaos!
2. Establish a communications center. This will be the place where you can put everyone’s schedules, chore lists, and reminders. You can use a whiteboard, a chalkboard, or even a calendar on your fridge. This should be in plain-sight and will help eliminate miscommunication and will help your family remember important events.
3. Set up a breakfast/snack station. Make breakfast less time-consuming by stocking up on healthy on-the-go breakfasts your kids can assemble if they are old enough. While they are making their breakfasts, you can pack their lunches, saving you time and making busy school mornings flow easier.
4. Install shelves and bookcases in the kids bedrooms. This will help keep their clothing, books, and toys organized and their rooms clutter-free.
5. Create a study work/space. This can be your dining room table, the kids bedrooms, or even a “home office”. Having a homework zone will help your kids do their assignments in a relaxed environment where they can focus all of their attention on their assignments.
