Tips for Moving to a New City

Moving to a new city isn’t always glamorous as movies make it seem. There’s a lot of time and thought that has to go into a big move – which can be quite daunting. As a custom home builder, Taylor Homes has worked with numerous customers who have moved to new cities and we have the top tips we’ve learned along the way.

  1. Visit the place you’re moving to – The first step before moving to a new city is to visit. Scope out the area you plan to live (or want to live). If you have kids, visit the schools they will attend, learn about the different activities in the area and ultimately get acquainted with nearby locations such as grocery stores. This step will help relieve some of the stress of the unknown.

If the new city is too far to travel to, or there’s just not enough time, do your research. Google maps can help tremendously, especially with its street view option. You’ll feel like you’ve been transported there for at least a little bit 😉

  1. Plan your packing accordingly – Don’t wait for the last minute to start packing your items! Make a plan, find moving checklists to help you follow. It’s helpful to break down the packing into small tasks, by different rooms weeks before moving day.

Once you have a packing plan in place, be sure to set aside your essentials you’ll need when arriving at your new home. Think of it like your travel things you would take on a vacation since your belongings likely won’t be put away and organized for a few weeks.

  1. Explore! – Once you’ve arrived in your new city and no longer feel too overwhelmed, explore, explore, explore! Maybe you join groups you’re interested in such as a gym, or book club. Say yes to as many new things as you can. Hang out at coffee shops or other areas close to where you live. Sign your kids up for their favorite activities and soon the entire family will start to feel at home.
  1. Find a suitable home – This step could come first or it could come last, depending on your situation. If your move was quick and somewhat unexpected, it’s likely you’re renting and will eventually want to find a suitable new home to own. If you knew about your move months and months prior, you may have started with finding you new home first. Either way, a new home is on the list of to do’s. We encourage you to think about a custom home for a new and fresh start – you’ll be able to pick and choose what is important to you and make your new city truly home.
